$2,200 – $5,000That is the typical gutter replacement cost in 2026 for a full system on an average home, or $12 to $25 per linear foot installed. Tearing off and hauling away the old gutters adds $150 to $300, and rotted fascia behind them is the line that most often catches homeowners out. If only a few sections are damaged, a repair at $100 to $450 may be all you need. Those are HomeGuide’s figures; Fixr puts a full replacement at $2,582 to $4,699, and HomeBuddy at $700 to $6,400 with most projects around $2,500.
Replacing gutters is a different job from putting them on a house for the first time. The old system has to come down, the boards it was fastened to have to be checked, and you have to decide whether the problem really calls for new gutters at all. This guide walks through each of those decisions and what they cost.

Gutter replacement cost: three guides compared
The three published cost guides we checked agree on the middle of the range but not on the edges. HomeBuddy’s range is much wider because it covers everything from a small house with budget sectional gutters to a large one with seamless copper or zinc (HomeBuddy).
| Line | HomeGuide | Fixr | HomeBuddy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full system replaced | $2,200 – $5,000 | $2,582 – $4,699 | $700 – $6,400 (average about $2,500) |
| Per linear foot, installed | $12 – $25 | $5 – $32 by material | $3 – $40 |
| Remove and dispose of old gutters | $150 – $300, or $1 – $2 per linear foot | Not listed | $1 – $2 per linear foot, plus $150 – $350 to haul away |
| Repair instead of replacing | $100 – $450 | $218 – $396 | $70 – $770 (most isolated fixes $175 – $450) |
Estimate your gutter replacement cost
Use the tables above to estimate your cost. The interactive calculator needs JavaScript.
Our estimate: each material price in the calculator runs from the lower of HomeGuide’s and Fixr’s per-foot figures to the higher of the two (see the material table below); vinyl is Fixr’s range alone. The fascia line assumes the whole run needs new board, which is the worst case. These are our own combinations of published ranges, not measured prices.
Repair or replace your gutters?
Gutter repairs cost $100 to $450 on average, against $2,200 to $5,000 for a full replacement (HomeGuide); Fixr’s average repair is $218 to $396 (Fixr). Repairs are worth it if only a few sections need replacing; old and badly damaged gutters that leak often are the ones that benefit most from replacement (HomeGuide).
| Problem | Typical fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Water pools or overflows at one end | Pitch adjustment | $75 – $200 |
| Gutter pulling away from the roof | Sagging repair (new spikes or screws) | $75 – $300 |
| Small leak at a seam or hole | Leak repair with roofing cement | $100 – $225 |
| Only cosmetic wear or faded color | Paint the gutters | $100 – $900 |
| Short damaged run, sectional gutters | Replace sections | $6 – $17 per linear foot |
| Cracks, rust and leaks along most runs | Full replacement | $12 – $25 per linear foot |
HomeGuide lists these as signs that it is time to replace rather than patch: gutters sagging away from the roof, many cracks, holes or rust spots, sections that keep separating, frequent overflowing that rots the fascia, eroded landscaping below, and water pooling around the foundation (HomeGuide).
Age matters too. Steel and aluminum gutters last 20 to 30 years and copper 50 years or more (HomeGuide). HomeBuddy suggests replacing rather than repairing when sagging, rust or cracking runs across the system, when leaks keep coming back after repairs, or when the gutters are near the end of their expected life (HomeBuddy). A 25-year-old aluminum system with several leaks is near the end of its life; a 5-year-old one with one bad corner is not.

Repair cost by length of damaged gutter
When only part of the system is failing, the price of replacing those sections rises with the length involved:
| Length replaced | Cost |
|---|---|
| 10 feet | $75 – $170 |
| 20 feet | $120 – $350 |
| 30 feet | $180 – $500 |
| 40 feet | $240 – $680 |
| 50 feet | $300 – $850 |
The type of gutter you have changes the math. Sectional gutters are cheaper to repair because the installer can swap one small damaged piece; seamless gutters are one long piece, so the whole run has to be replaced even for small damage. Sectional repairs run $100 to $450 and seamless repairs $150 to $750 (HomeGuide).
Our estimate: at HomeGuide’s $12 to $25 per linear foot, replacing a whole 180-foot system comes to about $2,160 to $4,500 (180 × $12 to $25). Once the damaged length passes roughly 50 feet, where section repairs reach up to $850, it is worth getting a full-replacement quote side by side. This is our own calculation from HomeGuide’s per-foot prices, not a measured figure.
Tear-off, disposal and fascia repair
These are the lines a replacement quote carries that a first installation often does not. HomeBuddy treats removal and disposal of the old system as its own line item, separate from installing the new one (HomeBuddy).
| Line on the quote | Cost |
|---|---|
| Remove and dispose of old gutters | $150 – $300, or $1 – $2 per linear foot (HomeGuide); $1 – $2 per linear foot to remove plus $150 – $350 to haul away (HomeBuddy) |
| Fascia or soffit replacement | $4 – $22 per linear foot each |
| Replacement hangers or brackets | $2 – $3 per hanger, plus labor |
| Gutter contractor labor | $50 – $150 per hour |
| Minimum service call | $75 – $200 |
| Siding repair where water has damaged it | $2 – $14 per square foot |
Fascia is the big unknown. Strong fascia board is essential to support the weight of new gutters (HomeGuide), and frequent overflowing is one of the ways gutters rot it. How much board needs replacing may only be clear once the old gutters are off, so ask how the contractor will charge for rotten boards found during the tear-off.
Our estimate: if 40 feet of fascia turns out to be rotten, replacing it at $4 to $22 per linear foot adds about $160 to $880 to the job (40 × $4 to $22). The 40 feet is an example, not a typical figure; this is our own multiplication of HomeGuide’s price range, not a measured price.
If water has also damaged the wall below, the siding may need work as well; see our guide to siding replacement cost. And if the roof is near the end of its life, it can make sense to plan both jobs together; see roof replacement cost.
Replacement cost per linear foot by material
A replacement is a chance to change material. The three guides price each material per linear foot, installed:
| Material | HomeGuide (seamless) | Fixr | HomeBuddy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | Not listed | $5 – $10 | $3 – $7 |
| Aluminum | $6 – $12 | $7 – $13 | $3 – $15 |
| Steel | $8 – $20 | $7 – $12 | $5 – $20 (galvanized) |
| Zinc | Not listed | $16 – $29 | $15 – $30 |
| Wood | Not listed | $17 – $31 | $20 – $32 |
| Copper | $30 – $50 | $18 – $32 | $15 – $40 |
The guides broadly agree on aluminum and steel but not on copper, where HomeGuide’s range starts about where Fixr’s ends; get more than one quote before choosing it. HomeBuddy prices seamless gutters at $8 to $28 per foot and sectional at $3 to $9 (HomeBuddy).
HomeGuide’s per-foot prices for aluminum and steel sit at or below HomeGuide’s all-in average of $12 to $25 per foot for a full replacement. Use the material prices to compare options, and the all-in figure to sanity-check the total on a quote, which should also cover tear-off, downspouts and any fascia work.
Built-in box gutters on older homes are a separate category. Replacing them costs $40 to $180 per linear foot, or $6,000 to $27,000 for up to 150 feet, and often needs a historic-roofing specialist. Lining them instead costs $1,000 to $2,200 with liquid rubber or epoxy, or $2,000 to $8,000 with metal (HomeGuide).
Replacing downspouts
| Downspout material | Per linear foot | Per downspout (10–15 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl / PVC | $3 – $4 | $30 – $60 |
| Aluminum | $4 – $5 | $40 – $75 |
| Steel / metal | $6 – $12 | $60 – $180 |
| Seamless | $6 – $17 | $60 – $255 |
| Copper | $15 – $35 | $150 – $525 |
Most homes have 4 to 5 downspouts, each 10 to 15 feet long (HomeGuide). A replacement is a good moment to check there are enough: University of Minnesota Extension recommends at least one downspout per 50 linear feet of eave, discharging at least 4 feet from the wall, and warns that a downspout without an extender or splash block dumps the roof’s water in one spot next to the basement (University of Minnesota Extension).
Adding gutter guards to the new gutters
Professionally installed gutter guards cost $15 to $45 per linear foot, or $3,000 to $9,000 for 200 feet; installing them yourself runs $1 to $5 per foot (HomeGuide). The type decides both the price and how long the guard lasts:
| Guard type | Material, per linear foot | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic screen | $0.50 – $1.00 | 3 – 6 years |
| Perforated aluminum | $0.50 – $2.00 | 10 – 20+ years |
| Foam | $1.50 – $3.50 | 2 – 5 years |
| Steel screen | $1.50 – $5.00 | 5 – 10+ years |
| Brush | $2.00 – $4.00 | 10 – 20 years |
| Micro-mesh | $2.00 – $5.00 | 3 – 10+ years |
| Reverse curve | $3.50 – $10.00 | 10 – 20+ years |
Guards are not maintenance-free: foam guards can grow mold and fungus if not maintained, and micro-mesh blocks fine debris but is more prone to clogging (HomeGuide). Without guards, professional gutter cleaning costs $100 to $250 a visit (HomeGuide), which is the number to weigh the guards against.
What else moves the price
- Height. Two- and three-story homes need extra downspout sections and safety measures, which raise labor costs (HomeGuide).
- Material thickness. Thicker, higher-quality material costs more (HomeGuide).
- Downspout length. Some lots slope in a way that needs downspouts running more than 5 feet from the foundation (HomeGuide).
- Season. Fall and spring are the busiest months for gutter guard work, and prices can be higher then (HomeGuide).
A full replacement of 150 to 200 feet takes 12 to 15 hours of work (HomeGuide).
How to keep the bill down
- Get a repair quote before a replacement quote: a pitch adjustment or leak fix costs a fraction of new gutters.
- If only the finish is worn, painting at $1 to $4 per linear foot can be enough (HomeGuide).
- With sectional gutters, future damage can be fixed one section at a time, which costs less than replacing a seamless run.
- Agree a per-foot price for fascia in writing before work starts, so rot found during tear-off does not become an open-ended extra.
- Compare at least three in-person estimates from licensed, insured contractors, be wary of the cheapest quote, and avoid large upfront payments (HomeGuide).
Questions to ask before you sign
- Could these gutters be repaired instead, and what would that cost?
- Does the price include removing and hauling away the old gutters?
- How will you charge for rotten fascia or soffit found once the old gutters are off?
- Will you replace the downspouts, and where will each one discharge?
- Will you re-slope the new gutters so they drain properly?
- What warranty covers the materials and the workmanship?
