Our figures are estimates, not quotes
Every cost on this site is a range compiled from published pricing, industry data and regional labor rates. None of it is an offer, a quote or a guarantee of price. Actual cost depends on your property, your region, the condition of the work, material availability, permits and the contractor you hire.
How we source figures
Every figure in an article links to where it came from, and each article ends with a list of its sources. We use sources in this order:
- Official sources first. Government agencies such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Department of Energy, the IRS, the EPA and Medicare, and recognized industry surveys such as the Genworth/CareScout Cost of Care Survey.
- Published cost guides, named. Where no official source prices a job, we cite national cost guides by name and date.
- Our own estimates, labeled. When we calculate a number ourselves, it is marked as our estimate and the calculation behind it is stated. It is never presented as measured data.

Accuracy and currency
Prices move. We date every article and update figures when we can, but a guide may be out of date by the time you read it. Treat the update date as part of the data.
